A former principal at a Fairfax County, Virginia, middle school is facing assault charges after he allegedly "smacked" a 12-year-old female student "on her buttocks," police announced Tuesday, according to our affiliate WJLA.
Terrence Eugene Yarborough, 53, of Woodbridge was put on administrative leave and removed from Carl Sandburg Middle School after a report of an incident in the cafeteria on April 4, officials say.
Police say the girl was with friends in the cafeteria when Yarborough came in and asked her twice to pick something up from the floor. The student said "no" both times and Yarborough struck her, according to police.
The girl then left and told a teacher what had happened. The school resource officer, Fairfax County Public Schools authorities and Child Protective Services were all made aware of the alleged incident. Both FCPS and Fairfax County Police are investigating.
Yarborough served in the Marine Corps for close to a decade before working in FCPS for 10 years.
"I always tell my students that they are loved," he said in a video from 2015.
Yarborough is charged with assault and battery and was served with a misdemeanor criminal summons on Monday.
The former principal will go before the Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court on August 4.
