Ed Sheeran is back on Twitter after deleting his account earlier this week. And having already left the platform once before back in 2015, Sheeran cements his place among a lengthy list of celebrities who have removed their accounts for one reason or another.
Mean-spirited comments tend to be one of the most common motives for deletion. There was a lot of speculation that Sheeran's recent disappearance from Twitter had to do with criticism surrounding his "Game of Thrones" cameo on Sunday's premiere. Many show viewers mocked the scene on Twitter and complained that the pop star's minor role broke their immersion in the show.
I'm honestly still mad about Ed Sheeran in Game of Thrones...It burst the bubble of Westeros & suddenly I saw lights, cameras & a fake sky..— Andrew Matarazzo (@andrewmatarazzo) July 18, 2017
The reason for his account deletion could have also been related to Monday's Buzzfeed article titled "24 Tweets Ed Sheeran Will Probably Delete Soon."
Sheeran has a prior history of taking a break from social media. After his 2015 tour, he announced on his Instagram account that he was tired of "seeing the world through a screen."
