A man is dead after falling from the sunroof of a car that was heading erratically down Interstate 405 in Kirkland, Washington, early Monday -- and now the driver of the car is missing, the Washington State Patrol reports.

The bizarre incident unfolded at about 3 a.m. when witnesses called 911 to report that a blue BMW was all over the freeway as it headed down the southbound lanes of I-405 - with a man who appeared to be "car-surfing" by standing up through the vehicle's sun roof, our affiliate KOMO reported.

The man fell out near the 85th Street interchange when the car hit a guardrail - but the driver kept going. The man who fell died at the scene. Trooper Rick Johnson described him as a young male but did not have more specifics.

Police later received a call from someone asking to meet with law enforcement about the accident. Johnson says that when investigators showed up, however, the person wasn't there. They canvassed the area and found the BMW nearby, but have not yet identified who was driving.

Police and troopers are now trying to track down the driver, who is suspected of hit-and-run.
