Some Twitter users on Friday noted that many of the “SNL” nominations stemmed from the show’s spoofing of President Trump and his administration last season.
HBO’s sci-fi western “Westworld” is up for the same number of Emmys this year as “SNL” with 22 nominations.
“SNL” also broke its own record for most nominations for a single show, however, now boasting 231 nods since its inception in 1975.
The show’s last season featured multiple skits sharply mocking Trump and his administration’s officials.
Actor Alec Baldwin, who repeatedly played Trump this year, is in the running for the supporting actor in a comedy series Emmy.
Actress Melissa McCarthy, meanwhile, has been nominated for the guest actress in a comedy series for her impersonation of White House press secretary Sean Spicer.
Actress Kate McKinnon also got a nod for best supporting actress in a comedy series for portraying several Trump administration officials like Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
Trump has raged against “SNL” skits about him and his administration, calling the show “really bad television” and a “complete hit job” on Twitter in January.
The president has also directed vitriol at Baldwin, whose caricature of him has won critical reviews.
