Nigerian authorities are investigating claims that a 15-year-old teenager stowed away for 12 hours in the wheel compartment of a plane that was flying between the Nigerian capital of Lagos and London, reports Yahoo.
"We are looking into the incident to find how it happened and to prevent a recurrence," said Sam Adurogboye, who works with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).
How the teenager would have been able to survive at such a high altitude for such a long amount of time is a bit of a mystery. At 32,000 feet, the plane was flying much higher than the normal 10,000 feet it takes for hypoxia, or oxygen deficiency, to set in and render a person unconscious. Temperatures at that altitude are also able to be as cold as -55 degrees Fahrenheit.
However, there are known cases of people stowing away on such flights successfully.
In April of 2014, the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation said that a 16-year-old boy successfully stowed away on a flight between California and Hawaii at an altitude of 38,000 feet.
