Nevada is now the fifth state in the U.S. to sell legal recreational marijuana

At exactly midnight Saturday, Nevada joined Colorado, Oregon, Washington and Alaska on the list of states in the U.S. that allows adults to buy and sell marijuana for recreational purposes.

With 39 dispensaries licensed to sell recreational marijuana in Clark County and 44 -- total -- in Nevada, many dispensaries held midnight launch parties to ring in the sales debut.

Former Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman attended a local launch party to make a purchase.

The lines outside of these launch parties were packed.

The Department of Taxation in the state has also launched a website covering the latest on marijuana in Nevada, as well as a statewide public awareness campaign.

Some dispensaries got a head start earlier in the week, preparing for the July 1 launch.
