Brad "Darbian" Myers is more than just your average gamer. During the day, he is a full-time software engineer. After hours, however, he takes part in what is known as "speedrunning."
Speedrunning, in a nutshell, is completing a game as quickly as possible. This type of play has sparked a whole community of gamers to participate in competitions or streams. Darbian was first introduced to this scene in 2013 when he saw the "Awesome Games Done Quick" charity take place. He has been speedrunning ever since.
His first world record for "Super Mario Bros." was achieved in October 2015, where he completed the game in 4 minutes and 57.627 seconds. Since then, he has improved his time to 4 minutes and 56.878 seconds, which is the current record to date. It took over a year to shave off less than a second, but this seemingly small amount is no easy feat.
Special techniques and tricks are discovered and practiced so that they are memorized to the dot. Years of practice could only amount to a few seconds at most off of a personal record. To assist with practicing, some people in the community have even modded games to make the process more efficient. For example, a speedrunner named Dotsarecoolp made a version of "Super Mario World" that makes resetting levels faster, eliminates cutscenes, etc.
Dedication and a rigid schedule have allowed Darbian to achieve the success he has. In addition to his full-time job, he also streams on Twitch. Since his record-setting performance, more attention has been drawn to his streams and he finds himself having more viewers than before, including families. Due to this, he makes sure to keep his streams family-friendly and tends to keep things as PG as possible, something not often done in the streaming world.
Darbian's performance is one of many records he has, but "Super Mario Bros." has so far been the most notable. Although incredible in his own right, Darbian says that the competition is improving so quickly, that he believes the record several years down the road will be something he could never dream of obtaining. Until then, however, he holds the title.
