Twenty years ago JK Rowling released her first 'Harry Potter' book

June 26 marks the day the first "Harry Potter" book was released to the world 20 years ago.

Twenty years ago, JK Rowling’s manuscript was rejected by 12 publishing houses and was finally accepted by Bloomsbury, which distributed a few copies because they were unsure if it would be popular.

Now, Rowling’s books have sold more than 160 million copies in the U.S. alone, and Warner Bros’ "Harry Potter" movies brought in $6.5 billion at the worldwide box office.

The first editions of the "Harry Potter" series are hard to come by and sell for thousands of dollars. In 2005, a man from the U.S. bought a rare edition of "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" for $37,000.
