Quarterback Derek Carr has become the NFL’s highest-paid player in terms of new money average, a source told ESPN’s Dan Graziano.
Carr has finalized a five-year extension with the Oakland Raiders worth $125 million, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The football star on Thursday confirmed the agreement on Twitter, adding he looks forward to playing soon.
Now it's done 😂! From the jump I've wanted to be a Raider 4 life. One step closer to that! Blessed!!! Business done! Let's just play now!!!— Derek Carr (@derekcarrqb) June 22, 2017
Current and former NFL players also tweeted out praise for the deal, which keeps Carr, 26, under contract with the Raiders through 2022.
ESPN reported that Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck previously topped the NFL’s salary list with $24.6 million.
New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees reportedly makes $24.25 million, while Washington Redskins quarter Kirk Cousin purportedly nets $23.9 million.
Carr passed for 3,937 yards and 28 touchdowns with just six interceptions last season, helping bring the Raiders to their first postseason appearance since 2002.
The quarterback’s deal may reportedly be backloaded until the Raiders relocate to Las Vegas, seeing as Nevada lacks any state tax while California’s tax rate is 13.3 percent.
