Daniel Day-Lewis has decided to finish his acting career following the release of his next movie, according to his representative.

“[He] will no longer be working as an actor,” Leslee Dart told The Associated Press Tuesday.

“[Day-Lewis is] immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years.”

Dart added that Day-Lewis, 60, would not comment further about his decision to leave acting behind.

Twitter users on Tuesday posted reactions to Day-Lewis’ decision, with many voicing sadness over the actor’s move.

Other Twitter users joked that Day-Lewis, who is renowned for his method acting, is merely researching his next role.

Day-Lewis’ final film will reportedly be “Phantom Thread,” which is scheduled for release in December and finds him playing a fashion designer in 1950s London.

The movie is directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, who previously cast Day-Lewis as a ruthless oilman in 2007’s “There Will Be Blood.”

Lewis won his first Academy Award for Best Actor in 1989 for “My Left Foot” before nabbing two more for “There Will Be Blood” and “Lincoln” in 2012.

The actor has been nominated for the prize two other times, and Time called him “the world’s greatest actor” in its Nov. 5, 2012, issue.
