Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez is endorsing Puerto Rico for statehood.
Perez, the first Latino elected chairman of the DNC, told Politico he believes Puerto Ricans should have the same rights as those on the mainland and that his personal view is that statehood is the best method to provide them with full representation in government and equal rights.
Perez's endorsement comes nearly one week after 97 percent of voters in Puerto Rico backed statehood.
Puerto Rico's referendum sent a strong and clear message to Washington, D.C., that Puerto Ricans want full rights as American citizens, but the island still has a long way to go to achieve statehood.
For now, Puerto Rico's governor, Ricardo Rosselló, will choose two senators and five representatives to travel to the nation's capital and demand to be seated.
Some think Perez's decision to endorse Puerto Rico for statehood is politically motivated to advance the Democrats' national agenda.
I am for it if it's what the PR people want but it doesn't surprise me it's what the Dems want it will change the electoral map for sure— mindfullibertarian (@mindfulliberta1) June 19, 2017
