UPDATE 6:39 p.m. EST:

MedStar Washington Hospital Center announced that Rep. Scalise's condition has upgraded from "critical" to "serious" on Saturday, according to a statement. He underwent another surgery but continues to show signs of improvement.

"He is more responsive, and is speaking with his loved ones. The Scalise family greatly appreciates the outpouring of thoughts and prayers," the statement added.

ORIGINAL STORY: Steve Scalise's trauma surgeon Friday said the congressman can hope to make an "excellent recovery," even though the lawmaker arrived at the hospital Wednesday at imminent risk of death after getting shot at a congressional baseball practice.

Dr. Jack Sava of MedStar Washington Hospital Center said it’s a "good possibility" that the Louisiana Republican will be able to return to work in his full capacity.

It is still unclear exactly when Scalise, 51, will be able to leave the hospital.

Scalise remains in critical condition in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

The lawmaker has undergone multiple surgeries and procedures to stop the bleeding and repair bone. He has also received multiple blood transfusions.

Sava said Friday that there are hundreds of bullet fragments in Scalise’s body, but "we have no intention to try and remove all the bullet fragments at this point." However, he said he and his colleagues "fully expect him to be able to walk" and "hopefully run."
