Evan Hansen, Dolly and host Kevin Spacey had the BEST nights at the 2017 Tony Awards

WATCH | This year's Tony Awards got just a little political.

tonyaward 2.png

The 2017 Tony Awards made us laugh, made us cry and made us super proud of the ballot boxes we bet on... as long as those boxes were next to the shows anchored by Bette and Ben.

The things that make you strange are the things that make you powerful.
Dear Evan Hansen's Ben Platt, Tony Winner

(Told ya!)

AND THE AMERICAN THEATER WING'S TONY GOES TO:

BEST MUSICAL

Dear Evan Hansen

(BEST PRESENTATION SKIT EVER!  HELLO ROBIN WRIGHT!  HELLO MICHAEL KELLY!)

Shut that crap off.
Bette Midler, to the Tony Awards orchestra

HAHAHAHA!  And then that 5 second delay CBS has on the Tony Awards comes in handy thanks to Bette who goes silent for several seconds!

AND THE AMERICAN THEATER WING'S TONY GOES TO:

BEST LEADING ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL

Bette Midler for Hello, Dolly!

(She said 'ass' during her speech and it was glorious.)

AND THE AMERICAN THEATER WING'S TONY GOES TO:

BEST LEADING ACTOR IN A MUSICAL

Ben Platt for Dear Evan Hansen

(When he said, "OMG, this is a Tony!" OMG.)

Five gorgeous Broadway voices filling a somber room with the classic Boyz II Men tearjerker 'It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday' scored a very touching In Memoriam at the Tony Awards tonight.

and a princess...

AND THE AMERICAN THEATER WING'S TONY GOES TO:

BEST REVIVAL OF A MUSICAL

Hello, Dolly!

(Stephen Colbert's intro, though!  Savage.  Hilarious.  Wildly Inappropriate.  Perfect.)

Consider me there opening night!

Dr. Jill Biden brought Radio City to its feet introducing the cast of Bandstand.

AND THE AMERICAN THEATER WING'S TONY GOES TO:

BEST PLAY

Oslo by J.T. Rogers

(I would like to point out I had 'Oslo' already typed into this entry before Mr. Lithgow announced it.)

AND THE AMERICAN THEATER WING'S TONY GOES TO:

BEST CHOREOGRAPHY

Andy Blankenbuehler for Bandstand

The Great Comet is absolutely an experience rather than just a show.  (I'm 90% sure the two ladies who just sat on Stephen Colbert's lap also sat on mine when I saw the show!)

My favorite reaction of the night so far?  This!

AND THE AMERICAN THEATER WING'S TONY GOES TO:

BEST REVIVAL OF A PLAY

August Wilson's Jitney

(WTAF, Josh Gad?!  We were all just super excited about your coming back in that revival of Forum!  That wasn't nice.)

AND THE AMERICAN THEATER WING'S TONY GOES TO:

BEST BOOK OF A MUSICAL

Steven Levenson for Dear Evan Hansen

Patti LuPone Snatches Phone Away From Audience Member

Just for some added drama, I double dog dare anyone in the audience to take their phone out during this Warpaint number.

AND THE AMERICAN THEATER WING'S TONY GOES TO:

BEST DIRECTION OF A MUSICAL

Christopher Ashley for Come From Away

(And a bit of another surprise!)

AND THE AMERICAN THEATER WING'S TONY GOES TO:

BEST DIRECTION OF A PLAY

Rebecca Taichman for Indecent

(Whoa!  This is a surprise for sure as she bested the directors of both Oslo and August Wilson's Jitney - both favored in this category.)

Have I mentioned I love this show & that I love it's whupping some theater butt tonight?

AND THE AMERICAN THEATER WING'S TONY GOES TO:

BEST FEATURED ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL

Rachel Bay Jones for Dear Evan Hansen

AND THE AMERICAN THEATER WING'S TONY GOES TO:

BEST LEADING ACTRESS IN A PLAY

Laurie Metcalf for A Doll's House, Part 2

Hello, Dolly! was the favorite here but Evan Hansen is having a great night.

bal-baltimore-s-andy-karl-receives-tony-award-nomination-for-groundhog-day-20170502.jpg

If anyone is going to upset Dear Evan Hansen's Ben Platt tonight it's this guy.  Andy Karl has gotten rave after rave after rave for his performance in Groundhog Day The Musical.

AND THE AMERICAN THEATER WING'S TONY GOES TO:

BEST LEADING ACTOR IN A PLAY

Kevin Kline for Present Laughter

Quick sidebar:  There's going to be a Soapdish musical and if Sally Field doesn't eventually present the Best Musical Tony Award to it then I just don't what I'll do.

AND THE TONYS GO TO:

Best Scenic Design for a Play:  Nigel Hook - The Play That Goes Wrong

Best Costume Design for a Play:  Jane Greenwood - Lillian Hellman's The Little Foxes

Best Lighting Design for a Play:  Christopher Ackerlind - Indecent

Let's do a little catch-up!  These awards were given out before the telecast and congratulations to them all.

AND THE TONYS GO TO:

Best Scenic Design for a Musical:  Mimi Lien - Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812

Best Costume Design for a Musical:  Santo Loquasto - Hello, Dolly!

Best Lighting Design for a Musical:  Bradley King - Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812

Shut up.  I'm not crying, you're crying.  (This is what everyone says to everyone during every performance of Dear Evan Hansen.  Fact.)

AND THE AMERICAN THEATER WING'S TONY GOES TO:

BEST SCORE

Music and Lyrics by Benj Pasek & Justin Paul for Dear Evan Hansen

Quick sidebar:  Seeing Cynthia Erivo perform in The Color Purple was otherworldly.  And I'm not kidding.

"So, whatcha thinkin' about wearing tonight?  Oh, cute."

Wow!  We've already gotten Whoopi Goldberg twice tonight and it's still the first hour!  (And, nice EGOT shout out lest we all forget she's won, like, everything.)

AND THE AMERICAN THEATER WING'S TONY GOES TO:

BEST FEATURED ACTRESS IN A PLAY

Cynthia Nixon for Lillian Hellman's The Little Foxes

(Congrats on Tony #2!)

This is one of a KAJILLION tweets loving Kevin Spacey as host tonight.

Lea Salonga's delight in introducing Miss Saigon was great!  Miss Saigon is a contender for Best Musical Revival tonight... against Falsettos and the powerhouse that is Hello, Dolly.

AND THE AMERICAN THEATER WING'S TONY GOES TO:

BEST FEATURED ACTOR IN A MUSICAL

Gavin Creel for Hello, Dolly!

(Nice touch having Sutton Foster present since Gavin was nominated for Thoroughly Modern Millie!)

Come From Away The Musical Teaser

The cast of Come From Away just let everyone know why they're giving Dear Evan Hansen a run for Best Musical money tonight!

Many thought this award was Danny DeVito's...

AND THE AMERICAN THEATER WING'S TONY GOES TO:

BEST FEATURED ACTOR IN  A PLAY

Michael Aronov for Oslo

Gervais, Lane, Jackman, Corden, O'Donnell, NPH, Goldberg, Crystal & even Lansbury - is Spacey going to put every host ever on blast right now?! The answer is YES!

(And how many "Is he gay or isn't he?" winks will Spacey give himself tonight?!  The answer is apparently LOTS!)

Kevin Spacey proves he's BROADWAY BOUND in his opening number!

Kevin Spacey wins 1991 Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play

Our host for the evening is Kevin Spacey who has tread the boards on Broadway at total of six times.  He won a Tony Award in 1991, Best Featured Actor in a Play for his role in Neil Simon's 'Lost in Yonkers.' Check out his acceptance speech.

I was their second choice for Unusual Suspects, fourth choice for American Beauty and 15th choice to host this year's Tony Awards.

Have you filled out your Tony ballots, yet?  The official one is available right HERE.

Everyone has their own predictions, of course.  However, I've been scouring the internet, talking to folks involved in the business of Broadway and seeing the shows here in NYC so I'm pretty sure my ballot is in good shape.

Hello, Dolly!?  CHECK!  Evan Hansen?  CHECK!  Oslo?  CHECK!

hamilton 2.jpeg

BUT, everyone loves a surprise, right?  (OMG, remember when Avenue Q beat Wicked for Best Musical?!)  Over the years the Tonys have gotten pretty good at those... well, except for last year. (It was all Hamilton all night and everyone knew it!)

This year my ballot has a LOT of Evan Hansen on it as it was hands down my favorite Broadway experience of the season.  Check out Best Leading Actor in a Musical hopeful Ben Platt on Late Night with Seth Meyers.

Will we have another La La Land/Moonlight moment?  The winner envelopes have arrived!

Will Josh Groban keep Ben Platt from taking home a Tony for Best Leading Actor in a Musical?

I think we can all agree it's about time Frank Underwood gets a little a drama in his life, right?  I mean, FINALLY.

james earl jones 2.jpg

Talk about a lifetime of achievement!  The 2017 Tony Awards celebrates James Earl Jones for his incredible career.  Jones has appeared in TWENTY productions since his 1958 debut and adds this honor to his other two Tony Awards.

Radio City Music Hall welcomes our host!

NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio gives some love to Broadway.
