Dick Costolo, the former chief executive of Twitter, said in a tweet that going to meetings between President Trump and Silicon Valley leaders is like getting waterboarded.
"If you don’t get invited to this meeting and want to know what it was like, just drink a bottle of gin and then waterboard yourself," Costolo tweeted.
He made the remark, according to The Hill, in reference to news that the president would be holding a meeting with venture capitalists and tech entrepreneurs later this month.
Here's the (questionable) tweet Costolo sent off.
As The Hill explains, Silicon Valley hasn't had the warmest dynamic with the president. In fact, it's been pretty tense at times. One point of concern for tech leaders was the Trump administration's aim to crack down on H1-B visas.
Using H1-B visas, American employers -- including many tech companies -- can temporarily hire foreign workers for specialty occupations.
And while Trump has reached out to tech leaders to join his business council, Uber CEO Travis Kalanick and Elon Musk have already stepped down.
Wait, what is waterboarding?
As Encyclopedia Britannica explains it, "Waterboarding, also called water torture or simulated drowning, [...] is a method of torture in which water is poured into the nose and mouth of a victim who lies on his back on an inclined platform, with his feet above his head."
So, how did people take Costolo's eyebrow-raising comment?
People mostly brushed it off.
Some joked gin was "most vile."
Then why do they go? Nobody's forcing them. Their own pathology's revealed in a desire to associate w/him.— Aunt Emma (@yourauntemma) June 10, 2017
Others didn't see the humor.
But mostly, people thought it was typical Costolo.
