The man widely credited with inventing 'Hawaiian' style pizza, Sam Panopoulos, has died. He was 83.
The man behind the pineapple-topped pizza died on Thursday in Ontario. His family said he had been in the hospital and that the death was sudden, the Associated Press reports.
The pizza maker was born in Greece and emigrated to Canada in 1954.
Some have disputed he invented the pizza, but Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has defended him.
Panopoulos told numerous news media that he made his first “Hawaiian” pizza in 1962 at the Satellite Restaurant in Chatham, Ontario, after wondering if canned pineapple might make a tasty topping, according to AP.
His funeral is set for Monday, June 12.
