In 1995, when Letourneau began her relationship with Fualaau, she was a 34-year-old mother of four. Since the two married, she had another two kids, daughters aged 18 and 20.

When their relationship was first discovered, she was sentenced to six months in jail and was told to have no further contact with her former student. She was caught having sex with Fualaau soon after and sentenced in 1997 to seven years in state prison for violating her parole.

When Letourneau was released in 2005, the two married.

Loads of people online were surprised to see Letourneau's name on the Twitter trends.
