This is the largest elephant seal rookery in the country, as more than 23,000 elephant seals call this beach home.  During peak season, this beach is absolutely covered in sleepy seals.

The beach is in San Simeon, directly across from Hearst Castle. There are signs up and down Highway 1 that direct you to the viewing platform, so it's easy to find. Once there, it's a gorgeous, dramatic setting.

You're not allowed to walk down onto the beach, because California has very strict rules in place to protect the marine wildlife all up and down the coast. But luckily, there's a very easy way to watch the seals.

This viewing platform is open all year long, and it's free. Just park and walk it's length. You'll see, hear, and smell everything going down on the sand below.

Take an entire 360 tour of the viewing platform, and make sure you scroll past the seals to see what they're up to.
