Russia and Ukraine are at war. On Twitter.

This story is either a statement of how deeply ingrained social media is becoming in political discourse, or how far we've fallen in the age of the internet.

Two countries, in this case Russia and Ukraine, engaged in an actual Twitter fight over whether a certain French queen established diplomatic relations between France and Russia, or France and Ukraine. Ukraine pretty decisively came out on top due to a superior knowledge of memes and "The Simpsons."

This is 2017. This is where we're at.

First, Ukraine posted a photo disputing Russia's timeline of historical diplomacy.

Whoever runs the actual, real Twitter account for Russia tried to amend the photo.

And the Ukraine twitter account came back in a big, big way. Excellent meme use.

People were definitely caught off guard.

And many were very, very surprised.
