Sportswriter Frank Deford has died at 78, The Washington Post reported.

Deford worked for Sports Illustrated for more than 50 years. He was a regular commentator on National Public Radio and wrote 18 books.

Deford was honored as Sportswriter of the Year by the National Association of Sportscasters and Sportswriters six times and was a member of its Hall of Fame.

He was awarded the 2012 National Humanities Medal by President Obama during a ceremony at the White House.
