A noose was found hanging from a tree outside the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C., police say.
U.S. Park Police say the noose was found Friday, but it was unclear how long it'd been there.
The Hirshhorn Museum is a contemporary art and culture museum.
Smithsonian Secretary David Skorton told staff in an email that the institution is committed to having the museum be a "welcoming, inclusive and safe place for all."
He also classified the act as "deploring," according to the Washington Post.
This incident comes after someone hung bananas with racist messages not too far away at American University.
