Two men were publicly caned 83 times for engaging in sexual relations in Indonesia

Two men were publicly caned 83 times in front of a crowd for engaging in homosexual sex in Indonesia's ultra-conservative Aceh province, CNN reported

Hundreds of people turned out to see the rare public event, even filming the punishment. Even in Aceh, which follows strict Islamic law, it is uncommon to see men to be caned for sexual relations.

The men were arrested by a group of citizens who stormed into a home with video cameras and took videos of the two men. The videos were shared with local media.

The two men were found guilty and sentenced to 85 lashes, but two of the lashes were taken off the sentence because the men had already served two months in prison.

The two men were caned alongside four other couples who were found to have engaged in sexual relations outside of marriage.

The beatings began at 9 a.m. local time and took four hours to complete.

The beatings have stirred some strong reactions on social media.
