Israel was reportedly the source of secret intelligence that Trump gave to Russians

The Israel government was the source of classified intel that President Donald Trump shared with Russians, according to government officials with knowledge of the matter.

Israel was the ally that collected the highly classified intelligence that President Donald Trump allegedly shared in a meeting with Russian officials last week, the New York Times first reported.

Legally, the president can share classified information whenever, but experts in the intelligence community have expressed concern about the consequences.

A Israeli Embassy spokesman would not confirm to Circa the report that they were the source of secret intelligence, but stated,  "Israel has full confidence in our intelligence sharing relationship with the United States and looks forward to deepening that relationship in the years ahead under President Trump."

NBC News also confirmed the report that Israel was the source on Twitter.

Earlier Tuesday, Trump defended his conduct in his meeting with Russian officials.

National Security Correspondent Sara Carter and the Associated Press contributed to this report.
