Former Director of National Intelligence told CNN's Jake Tapper during an interview that U.S. institutions  are "under assault" by President Donald Trump.

“I think in many ways our institutions are under assault both externally and that’s the big news here, Russian interference in our election system and I think, as well, our institutions are under assault internally,” Clapper said.

Clapper was an Obama appointee who retired in January.

Some on social media are ready to heed Clapper's warning.

Clapper was especially concerned about Trump's abrupt dismissal of former FBI Director James Comey. Comey had been investigating potential ties between the Trump campaign and Russian officials. According to Clapper, some of his former FBI colleagues were disturbed by the president's actions.

“I spoke to one last night at dinner that was quite upset about it, and I think that reflects the widespread feeling in the FBI. I think as far as his stature as a leader and his integrity, people are very upset about the way he was treated," said Clapper.

Others aren't ready to listen to the former DNI.
