For those who questioned the functionality of Crocs, a Utah teen ran 13.1 miles in them

Those rubbery shoes will with punctuated holes mystified many, but, turns out, they actually do serve a person for some, particularly for 18-year-old Benjamin Pachev who completed a half-marathon in Crocs last Saturday, Fox 59 reported. In fact, the Utah native recognizes that his go-to shoe choice is pretty unorthodox.

“People look over at me and say what the heck are you thinking?” he said

Crocs just scored the best free marketing tool.

Pachev didn't just run 13.1 miles in Crocs, but he demolished the race, finishing in 1:11:53. That means he averaged less than 5:30 per mile.

To put that in perspective unfamiliar with run pacing, that's fast--really fast.

In case you needed more convincing that this kid is superhuman, he also already received a bachelor's degree in applied mathematics from Brigham Young University.

Running in Crocs appears to be a familial trend. His dad, Alexander Pachev, who goes by the nickname Sasha, ran in the rubbery shoes and finished in 1:16:07.

Though the concept of running in Crocs may befuddle some, the reasoning behind the shoe choice is rather simple: it's economical.

As the father of 10 children, Sasha recognized that running shoes proved too costly. Crocs, on the other hand, were an effective running shoe and they saved money.

“And we find the cheapest colors. If they’re hot pink and that’s the cheapest color we buy it,” he continued.

As for why Benjamin enjoys running in Crocs, he said they don't cause blisters and keep his feet cool.

“It’s like having a little fan that’s just streaming air over your foot,” Benjamin said, who averages about 65 miles per week.

And, unlike running shoes, Crocs are durable, lasting about 2,000 miles before showing signs of wear and tear.
