Three people in Arkansas, including a deputy, were killed during an ongoing standoff, KATV reported. State Police identified the deputy killed as 46-year-old Lt. Kevin Mainhart. The suspect, who remains holed up in a home as negotiators attempt to make contact, has remained unidentified as of Thursday afternoon.

It remains uncertain if there are hostages with the suspect.

Arkansas State Police spokesman Bill Sadler said a deputy responded to a domestic disturbance when he initiated a traffic stop, thinking the vehicle had information on the suspect connected to the emergency call.

During the course of the traffic stop, Sadler said he was fatally wounded.

Authorities are urging the public to refrain from going near the area.

"Safety first. Obviously, these types of situations are very volatile. There's someone with a gun who's agitated... Don't go past police. They've got the area pretty well locked down," a spokeswoman for the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management said.
