Who will replace FBI Director James Comey?

WATCH | Sara Carter discusses possible replacements for FBI Director James Comey.

James Comey would have been serving another six years as director of the FBI but someone new is about to take on the role of America's top cop after his abrupt firing by President Donald Trump on Tuesday.

According to administration officials, his replacement is expected to be named in the next few days.

But in Washington D.C. the rumor mill is already churning.

There is a semi-long list of disjointed potential nominees to fill the vacancy, which is supposed to be a ten-year term. That is unless you're fired by the Commander and Chief.  Pundits have taken to the airwaves to debate who it will be and what kind of person the embattled federal law enforcement agency needs to set things right and news reports around the country are tossing names out with the hope of catching the big one.

This is what Circa has learned.

*Deputy Director Andrew McCabe: He is currently the interim FBI director but don't expect him to be selected because according to sources who spoke with Circa, he's not exactly Trump's biggest fan. Another strike against McCabe is the ongoing investigation by the Inspector General into a $500,000 donation 2015 by Hillary Clinton ally Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe to his wife's congressional campaign.

*Ray Kelly:  According to sources he is well respected and he's already got lots of practice as the longest-serving police commissioner in New York City. He served for years after the Sept. 11 attacks is credited for developing new successful antiterrorism strategies for protecting major urban cities. Another point for Kelly, he's a New Yorker.

*Rep. Trey Gowdy: The South Carolina congressman is someone that is being considered for the job according to reports. He led the House committee investigation into Benghazi, Libya. He's also a former federal prosecutor who has been tough on drugs and child pornography.

*Chris Christie:  Here's a name we haven't heard in awhile. But it popped up all over the place after Comey was fired. The governor of New Jersey has had an up and down relationship with the president. However, he's a successful former Republican-appointed United States attorney in New Jersey and that may be the reason his name is in the hat.

*Mike Rogers:  Here's another blast from the past that may be in the running. He's a veteran FBI agent and served as the Republican House Intelligence Committee Chairman. He was also in the running to serve as FBI director in 2013. Rogers also served in the Army during the 1980s and has significant television experience.

John Pistole:  He was a former deputy director of the FBI and is now president of Anderson University in Indiana. He garnered lots of praise and recognition, however, for his work as administrator for the Transportation Security Administration.  It is reported he was close friends with Comey.
