Energy Secretary Rick Perry has been briefed on an incident involving the collapse of an underground railroad tunnel where nuclear waste was stored in Washington state, the Associated Press reported. A news release stated that Perry was told the agency will monitor the situation.
The department also noted that it doesn't appear that the collapse at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation, which occurred Tuesday morning, caused any injuries or the release of radioactive material.
As precaution, however, an emergency was declared, including the evacuation of facility personnel in and around the site. It's too early, according to officials, to say what caused the incident.
Washington Gov. Jay Inslee reiterated his commitment to ensuring the safety of Hanford's nearly 9,000 employees.
