WATCH | Fashion designer Lela Rose, known for her stunning bridal collections and for dressing celebrities like Jessica Alba, Chrissy Teigen and Gwyneth Paltrow, was honored as the "2017 Designer of the Year" at Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia.
As the honoree, Rose visited the school's student fashion show and spent a day critiquing graduating seniors' portfolios. She emphasized the importance of passion and perseverance in the fashion industry, crediting those traits for the success she's experienced in her career of more than 20 years.
"I think sometimes students or people think, 'Well, you know, once you've made it, you've made it.' You really never made it, and you have to just keep moving forward," Rose said.
Like many students at Marymount, Rose had a humble beginning.
"I had never learned how to sew until I was a sophomore in college and my mother taught me how to sew over Christmas one year," she said.
She eventually made her way to Parsons School of Design, where she learned useful technical skills. Just three years after graduating, she launched her own fashion line and hasn't stopped working since.
Rose just finished putting on a successful bridal show during New York Bridal Fashion Week.
Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, and former first lady Michelle Obama have worn Lela Rose.
ABC's "Modern Family" actress Julie Bowen wore Lela Rose on the red carpet last year.
