Children fidget, it’s what they do, especially in class – or at least that was the observation of Wake County math teacher Bethany Lambeth. Keen to help her class with their concentration (let’s face it most need all the help they can get when it comes to maths!) Bethany hit upon the idea of placing cycling machines under her kid’s desks. And it worked! Local news station WRAL "I think the world is changing a lot and the kids need to be able to do something different," Lambeth told local news station WRAL. "What we've been doing is not necessarily working." According to students at the school pedalling helps them to focus. "Before, they were drumming on their desks, they were touching other people, they don't do that anymore; their feet are getting the movement out," she said. "There has been a huge increase in the quality of our student's work and a decrease in the amount of missing work." Ina addition to improving concentration the Bethany’s students are also burning off calories. Quinn Spear told WRAL that he pedalled 5.5 miles and burned 133 calories, all before 10 a.m. "I'm a really energetic person, so this takes all my energy out," Spear said. Each desk cycle costs less than $150, which includes a warranty. On this occasion he cycles were paid for by a private donation and a grant from the 4-C fund. No taxpayer money was used. School officials said they hope desk cycles will make an even greater difference in Special Education classes. Seems like it won’t be long before the kids of Wake County are pedalling their way to success! Remember anything from middle school math class? Me neither. But even if you've tried to block out those times entirely, something probably stuck, right? Maybe at least one formula? After all, some of that stuff was drilled into our heads over and over and over again.

Try this quiz, and see if you can match wits with someone who is probably twelve years old and could do this in their sleep.
