UPDATE 8:44 a.m. EST: President Trump sent another tweet about the race.

ORIGINAL STORY: Democrat Jon Ossoff and Republican Karen Handel will head to a runoff election in June to fill former Rep. Tom Price's seat in Congress.

None of the 18 candidates running for special election in Georgia's 6th Congressional district were able to get more than 50 percent of the vote.

Ossoff, 30, took the top spot, with 48.3 percent. Handel came in second with 19.7 percent. Republicans fought fiercely against his campaign, even enlisting the help of President Trump

Trump was happy to take partial credit for the outcome.

Democratic National Committee chair Tom Perez also declared the outcome a victory.

The GOP vote in the deep-red state was divided among 11 Republican candidates. Now Ossoff will have an even bigger challenge, facing a single Republican candidate with united support.

Ossoff, a former congressional aide, has already raised over $8 million for his campaign and enlisted endorsements from heavy hitters like Reps. John Lewis (D-GA) and Hank Johnson (D-GA) and progressive groups like Moveon.org and End Citizens United.

Handel is a former Georgia secretary of state.

Democrats hoped this election could be the first step to retaking the majority in the House of Representatives from Republicans.

Trump only won Georgia's 6th district by two points in the presidential election. Democrats saw an opening to "flip the 6" after Tom Price left his seat to become Health and Human Services Secretary.
