Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Tuesday the gang MS-13 could be designated a terrorist organization.
President Trump tweeted about the gang on Tuesday, claiming without evidence the Obama administration made the gang stronger.
Sessions said it was not within his power to designate a group a terrorist organization, as that is up to the State Department, but it may be helpful to do so.
The weak illegal immigration policies of the Obama Admin. allowed bad MS 13 gangs to form in cities across U.S. We are removing them fast!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 18, 2017
Here are Trump's recent tweets about MS-13.
AG Sessions is doing a fantastic job: announced today new steps to dismantle violent gangs like MS-13. I promised to get tough and we are!— President Trump (@POTUS) April 18, 2017
MS-13, or Mara Salvatrucha was founded in Los Angeles in the 1980s by Central American immigrants. It has more than 10,000 U.S. members and 30,000 members worldwide. The FBI has tracked it closely since at least 2004.
We can devastate this gang. We're going after them.
Sessions and the Trump administration as a whole have touted border security as a solution to the growth of gangs like MS-13. He called MS-13 "one of the most violent gangs in the history of our country."
