"Fate of the Furious" will go down in history.
Not because of anything in the movie itself, but because of how much it made. It broke the record for the biggest opening weekend, raking in $532.5 million since its debut, CNN Money reports.
That topples "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," which made $529 million. But that movie was crippled by not opening in China during its global release weekend. "Fate of the Furious" now holds the record for biggest opening in China as well.
It's also the biggest opening for an African-American director. F. Gary Gray now holds that record.
This is an astonishing feat for a decade-and-a-half-old franchise that launched ... with no stars and no imaginings of a long-term franchise future.
This is the eighth installment in the action movie series, with a ninth and tenth film on the way.
