Hundreds of Palestinian prisoners in Israel launched a hunger strike on Monday to demand better living and medical conditions.

Palestinian Authority Prisoners' Affairs Minister Issa Qaraqe said about 1,600 were taking part. Today is Palestinian Prisoners' Day, CNN reports.

Advocates claim Israel has unjustly detained and tortured prisoners. Israeli officials insisted they would not negotiate with prisoners.
