Gamers are really heartbroken after Nintendo's decision to nix the NES Classic console

If you owe the rare Nintendo NES Classic console, you might want to guard it with your life.

Gamers were shocked and upset after Nintendo announced on Thursday that it would be discontinuing its NES Classic video game console, USA Today reported. The last shipments of the console are rolling out this month.

"We encourage anyone interested in obtaining this system to check with retail outlets regarding availability," the company said in a statement. "We understand that it has been difficult for many consumers to find a system, and for that we apologize. We have paid close attention to consumer feedback, and we greatly appreciate the incredible level of consumer interest and support for this product."

The 1985 console was brought back to life last year, costing gamers just $60. It was an unexpected hit, particularly to gamers who were reminiscent of the days before HDMI cords and HD graphics. The bundle deal provided customers with a retro controller,  8-bit graphics and 30 pre-installed classic games including Pac-Man, Tecmo Bowl and Super Mario Bros.

Its out-of-date feel is exactly what appealed to gamers. In fact, retailers struggled to keep its inventory on pace with constant orders. With the system often selling out in seconds, secondary markets were often the best way to get your hands on the coveted console--costing more than twice what retailers were selling it for. Following Nintendo's announcement, the console was going for more than $280 on Amazon.

Many were quick to criticize Nintendo's business decision.
