British and European intel agencies monitored Russian officials and Trump associates

0

British and other European intelligence agencies intercepted communications between Donald Trump's associates and Russian officials, CNN reported. The communications were subsequently passed to their U.S. counterparts.

The communications were captured during routine surveillance of Russian officials known to western intelligence. The European agencies weren't proactively targeting Trump's associates, but were picked up during what's called "incidental collection."

Because of the so-called "Five Eyes" agreement, British agencies are able to seamlessly pass on intelligence to other members of the doctrine, which includes the U.S., Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.

News of the intercepted communications surface as U.S. officials continue to investigate Russia's efforts to meddle in the 2016 presidential election.

"If foreign intelligence agencies share information with US intelligence, and it's relevant to the investigation, then, of course, the intelligence committee will look at it," a source close to the Senate investigation told CNN.
