A U.S.-led coalition airstrike against ISIS mistakenly killed 18 members of the Syrian Democratic Forces, rebels fighting against Bashar al-Assad, the Pentagon said Thursday.

The airstrike location had been wrongly identified as an ISIS position when it was actually a rebel-held position in Tabqah in northern Syria.

"The Coalition's deepest condolences go out to the members of the SDF and their families," a Pentagon statement read.
