The day after President Trump's inauguration, Spicer hit the ground running in his first White House press briefing. After tweets began to compare the size of Trump's inauguration crowds with that of President Obama's, Spicer adamantly declared that the white plastic covering on the National Mall gave the illusion that Trump's crowd size was much smaller than it actually was.

During Black History Month, Spicer said the contributions of black abolitionist leader Frederick Douglass "will become more and more." The use of the present tense befuddled reporters, who noted that Douglass passed in 1895.
