Well-known personal trainer Abeku Wilson opened fire inside the Equinox fitness center at the Shops at Merrick Park on Saturday afternoon, killing a former co-worker and injuring another before shooting himself, police said.
Wilson had been apparently fired from his job earlier in the day.
The gym's general manager, Janine Ackerman, and fitness manager, Marios Hortis, 42, were transported to a nearly hospital where Ackerman later died.
Witnesses reported hearing five shots after Wilson appeared in the main entrance of the gym, raised a handgun, and aimed it at another man behind the counter.
“He was very serious,” said the woman, Benedicte, 48, of Coral Gables, who would not give her last name. “He was not smiling.”

One person is dead and two people are wounded after a gunman opened fire at an upscale mall in Miami, police said. The person killed is suspected to be the shooter, who committed suicide after opening fire.
The incident occurred near an Equinox fitness club. Shed Boren, a gym member, said his trainer told him the incident involved a disgruntled trainer.
“I had just left Equinox,’’ he said. “I heard from my trainer that it was a trainer that had been let go. The general manager and one of the trainers were shot.’’
UPDATE 2:02 p.m. EST:
Coral Gables mall, which includes upscale shops like Nordstrom, Neiman-Marcus, Crate & Barrel, and Jimmy Choo shoes, has been placed on lockdown.
“There were definitely people who were injured; we saw them being carried away,” said Tim Hartog, the general manager at the nearby Yard House sports bar. “The entire mall is locked down and the road in front is closed too.”
When the shooting began, about 100 people were eating lunch on the outdoor patio.
“People rushed inside. People were hiding under tables,” he said. “It was just crazy.”
Miami-Dade police are investigating the situation.
ORIGINAL STORY: A gunman opened fire at the Village of Merrick Park in Caral Gables around 1 p.m. Saturday, the Miami Herald reported.
“I heard people say there was a shooting, there was a rifle,’’ said one shopper.
It's remains unclear if there are any injuries or casualties.
Heavy-armed law enforcement officers crowded the area near the mall in Miami. A helicopter landed at a nearby high school as well.
