Do you crochet? This church needs your help making sleeping mats for the homeless.

Ruth Headrick and Cathy Kruse are in charge of the the Homeless Ministry at the Harvestfield Church in Rainbow City, Alabama. Part of their job is to come up with creative ways to help the homeless in their community. The ladies recently came up with a cheap idea that can make a big difference.

They crochet sleeping mats made entirely of plastic bags.

We make these for the homeless so they can have something soft to lay on the ground.
Cathy Kruse

So far the Homeless Ministry has made over 35 mats, all crocheted.

"It's washable, it's bug resistant and we only use bags that we recycle," Kruse said.

"What we need is more help making the mats," Kruse said.

It's not as easy as it looks, but they'll teach you. But if it's too hard, there's another job to be done.

We have some that will cut a bag into strips. Others will tie the strips to make a plarn ball, which is a yarn ball made out of plastic.

The mats are distributed all over Etowah County.

"Just to show that we care ," Kruse said. "That we're trying to help (the homeless) on their journey."

How To Make a PLARN Bed Roll

You can also make plarn mats  at home and give them out to the homeless in your community. Here's a tutorial.
