Facebook is making it easier for you to contact your elected official

"Fake News" has existed for as long as news itself, but this year the negative impact of spreading false information became more apparent than ever.

And since the election in November, lawmakers have started receiving more calls from Americans who wish to weigh in on politics, according to The Washington Post.

Now Facebook, which was one of the sites where false information was spread during the election, has created a tool to help citizens contact their elected representatives.

Facebook's new tool, known as Town Hall, helps you find out who your local, state and federal representatives are all in one place.

To do this, go to the left-hand side of your Facebook News Feed under the "Explore" section. Then click on "Town Hall."

There you will be able to "Follow" or "Contact" your lawmakers directly by calling the number listed on his or her Facebook page.

Facebook users must submit their address so Town Hall can pull information about that specific user's elected officials.

The Washington Post reports that the data on those officials comes from their public pages or a database called Cicero

"Building a civically-engaged community means building new tools to help people engage in a thoughtful and informed way," Facebook's creator Mark Zuckerberg said in a post Monday. "The starting point is knowing who represents you and how you can make your voice heard on the decisions that affect your life."

Facebook is working to incorporate this tool into the News Feed as well. It would allow Facebook users to like or comment on an elected official's post and would then prompt that user to tell others that they've contacted their representative.

"The more you engage with the political process, the more you can ensure it reflects your values," Zuckerberg said in his post. "This is an important part of feeling connected to your community and your democracy, and it’s something we’re increasingly focused on at Facebook."
