These gamers just won half a million dollars for playing 'Halo'

WATCH | The top "Halo" tournament in the world wrapped up on Sunday in Burbank, California,  awarding half a million dollars to the first-place team.

The Halo World Championship hosted the best teams from all around the world. Organized jointly by game developer 343 Industries and eSports tournament company ESL, the event kicked off its second year of play.

Optic Gaming took first place and the top prize at the event.

Second and third place walked away with $200,000 and $100,000, respectively.

For all of the gamers, this event was the pinnacle of their hard work. These teams practice for more than just a hobby. These competitions at this level serves as their full-time careers. 

In fact, this summer will mark the beginning of the new season with ESL's Halo Pro League. Although world champions now, other teams will be working to dethrone the champions and put their play to test in the year to come.

WATCH | As events like this, and esports in general grow, so do the number of sponsorships for teams and organizations like Optic Gaming.  And they are getting weirder.
