Mindy Kaling and Sen. Cory Booker may be the internet's new favorite couple

Mindy Kaling and Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) may not be the world's most likely couple. But thanks to a quick joke on "The Mindy Project," they might be going on a date, and Twitter has been waiting for that moment ever since.

It all started when Booker watched "The Mindy Project" on Thursday. In the episode, Kaling's character, Dr. Lahiri, made fun of Newark, New Jersey. In the show, Booker attended a party, which Lahiri joked was "anything to get out of Newark."

Here's the first tweet.

Then Kaling responded, saying her comment was in jest.

Booker jumped on Kaling saying the love was mutual and asked for a date.

Kaling said yes. And Twitter lost its mind.

The PATH train system even tweeted the schedule so the two could meet.

Twitter, of course, loved it.

Others thought it was too good to be true.

One person's tweet from 2013 calling  Booker a "perfect boyfriend" now seems prescient.

But the silence since the last tweet Thursday has some people concerned.

As The Washington Post reports, Kaling has been involved with political leaders before. She wrote in her collection of essays "Why Not Me?" that she was texting back and forth with a person later identified as former White House aide Robert Schmuck.
