WATCH | Karim Metwaly speaks to What's Trending's Shira Lazar about discrimination.
It can be difficult to fully understand what Muslims in America face on a daily basis. But Metwaly is attempting to demonstrate discrimination and intolerance toward Muslims through social experiment videos on his YouTube channel.
For many of us, our race may have never played a role in our dating lives, so when we see a woman turn away Metwaly after learning that his name has Muslim origins, it comes as a shock. It's similarly horrifying to see passersby laugh at a Muslim woman being hit. That's why it's so important for Metwaly to expose this behavior.
In one of his videos, Metwaly films two different women as they ask strangers to watch their bags. One woman is dressed like a typical American, while the other wears a hijab. While people were happy to watch the first woman's bag, the "Muslim" woman's request was met with hesitation and refusals.
I don't think anyone's going to be able to look at Muslims differently.
"I don't think anyone's going to be able to look at Muslims differently," Metwaly told Lazar. "There's always going to be that stigma, which is upsetting."
He believes education is one of the most important steps to eliminating discrimination. And with over 1 million subscribers on his channel, Metwaly is certainly furthering this goal.
In addition to demonstrating discrimination against Muslims in America, Metwaly focuses on bringing a number of other social issues to light. In this particular video, he shows how strangers are inclined to treat a homeless man and a homeless woman differently.
