Watch Neil Gorusch's Senate hearing live.
Judge Neil Gorsuch said that Roe v. Wade, the case that solidified abortion's legal status in the U.S., was an established precedent, but did not say whether he would repeal it.
Gorsuch, nominated by President Trump to fill the vacancy left by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia, faces a lengthy grilling by senators that will likely last days. The Supreme Court vacancy has long faced controversy. Senate Republicans denied former President Obama's nominee, Merrick Garland, a Senate hearing.
There's no such thing as a Republican judge or a Democratic judge. We just have judges in this country.
Conservative proponents of Gorsuch hoped a conservative majority on the Supreme Court would lead to the repeal of that case.
Gorsuch was pressed by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), who said Gorsuch posed a threat to the legal right to abortion.
WATCH | Gorsuch called the question of whether he'd be comfortable ruling against any party "a softball."
Pro-choice group NARAL noted Gorsuch said he was not opposed to overturning precedent.
And other critics warned it was all a charade.
Trump's official Twitter account tweeted an endorsement of Gorsuch.
Other supporters called his answer "awesome."
Here's the first part of the hearing in full.
