One teen's life and poetry have inspired others through Three Dot Dash to change the world

One teen's life and poetry have inspired others through Three Dot Dash to change the world

WATCH | Mattie Stepanek passed away from a rare neurological disease. His legacy continues on and has inspired Three Dot Dash. The organization recently held their Just Peace Summit in New York.

Each year Three Dot Dash chooses 30 teen social entrepreneurs known as Global Teen Leaders. These GTLs are ages 13-19 and have found a solution or innovation to address a basic human need.

Each GTL is paired with a mentor for one year and together they work on cutting edge content. The GTLs have come from 52 different countries over the past 8 years.

The Three Dot Dash event kicked off the Just Peace Summit, a year-long event for 30 teens who are leading initiatives that bring the world closer to peace. The projects range from creating cost-efficient power sources to summer camps for kindergartners.

Jeni 'Momma Peace' Stepanek spoke at Three Dot Dash on behalf of her deceased son, Mattie J.T. Stepanek. He was known around the world for his poetry and mission to spread peace around the world.

Jeni Stepanek had four children: Katie, Stevie, Jamie and Mattie, however, Mattie was the only one who survived past a young age. Jeni did not find out until after all her children were born that they passed away from Dysautonomic Mitochondrial Myopathy, an extremely rare disease. After she gave birth to Mattie, Jeni was diagnosed with the same disease.

Peace is possible if your basic human needs are met.

Stepanek continues her son's legacy through giving speeches about bringing people together to make the world a better place.

The Just Peace Summit is hosted by the We Are Family Foundation, a non-profit charity founded by Nile Rodgers, a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductee. Rodger's co-founded the popular band, 'Chic,' who wrote many hits including 'We Are Family.' Rodgers continues to spread the spirit of his song through the foundation.
