A donated trombone helped this teen escape from a life in Kenya's most dangerous slum

Simon Mungai, 16, is a trombone player in the Ghetto Classic Orchestra. The orchestra is located in Kenya's most dangerous slum and funded completely by the charity Art of Music.  Many say it's an escape from an otherwise dangerous environment.

"These kids are so proud of the fact that they performed for the Pope and for the president of Kenya. But my highlights are the lives that have been changed by classical music," says Elizabeth Njorge, founder of Ghetto Classic Orchestra.

The orchestra teaches more than 200 musicians on mostly donated and borrowed instruments.

Mungai said he lives with his family of five right outside East Africa's biggest dump site. His mother makes a living collecting plastic bottles and paper every day from the dump, which also serves as a hideout for gangs. Many teenagers who live in the surrounding areas become pressured into gang activities.  The young trombone player said that when he plays his trombone, even when overlooking the dump site, he feels as though he is transported to a new world.
