Fashion equals empowerment at Style Fashion Week in Los Angeles

WATCH | Just like art, literature and music, fashion has always been an important cultural tool used to make a statement. At the 12th Style Fashion Week in Los Angeles, three designers did just that on the closing night of the fashion week.

Thomas Wylde, a Los Angeles-based brand popular with celebrities like Lindsay Lohan and Charlize Theron, showed off its edgy shirts, pantsuits and gothic prints during its runway show.

"We're all about rock 'n' roll," said Jene Park, the creative director for Thomas Wylde.

"What's rock 'n roll without 'mother******'?" she asked, pointing to the shirts that had the phrase printed on them.

Park said her theme for this year's collection was all about female empowerment and resistance. As a South Korean immigrant living the American dream, Park said this message comes from a very personal place.

One striking piece was the pantsuit patterned with higanbana flowers, which are red spider lilies also known as "death flowers" in Japan. "People are so afraid of that flower ... I want to celebrate it," Park said.

To wrap up the night, fashion designer Adrian Alicea showcased his collection titled "New World Order," which flirted with gender fluidity and made a spectacular mix of nontraditional models.

"Just stay unorthodox," Alicea said, surrounded by models wearing colorful glitter and statement pieces. "I love a man in a skirt, so there you go."

In addition to the dazzling performances, Cirque du Soleil's Zumanity had photo booths set up throughout the venue and put on a half-time show that captured the crowd's attention.
