Trump called the DNC race 'totally rigged' against Keith Ellison. Tom Perez fired back.

UPDATE 9:14 a.m.:

Tom Perez responded to President Trump's claim that the Democratic National Committee race was "rigged" by turning the same criticism against Trump in a CNN interview.

"We need to look at whether this race was rigged by Trump and his buddy Vladimir Putin," Perez said. He added that letting Attorney General Jeff Sessions investigate accusations of Russian involvement would amount to the "fox guarding the henhouse."

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) also responded to those claims in a separate CNN interview, insisting the race was not rigged.

When asked if Sanders would share his mailing list of progressive supporters to the DNC, Sanders deflected, saying he would support candidates who would "stand up to the 1 percent."

Sanders warned Perez not to follow the Democratic Party's status quo.

A day after the Democratic National Committee elected Tom Perez as its new chairman, President Trump called the race "totally 'rigged.'"

The race's most prominent candidates were Perez, who was the Labor Secretary under President Obama, and Rep. Keith Ellison (R-MN), endorsed by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and much of the party's left wing.

On Saturday, Trump congratulated Perez sarcastically, saying he "could not be happier for him, or for the Republican Party."

Here's the tweet where Trump insisted the race was rigged.

Here's his initial tweet.

During his presidential campaign, Trump repeatedly criticized the DNC, saying it rigged the primaries in favor of Hillary Clinton. Leaked DNC emails showed some members favoring Clinton over Sanders, which led to accusations that the race was "fixed" and to former chairwoman Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz's (D-FL) resignation.

This time around, Trump claimed, "Clinton demanded Perez!" Former Vice President Joe Biden endorsed Perez alongside several members of Obama's cabinet.

Trump called that race "rigged" as well.

Perez fired back at Trump's congratulatory tweet on Saturday.

Ellison tweeted congratulations of his own to Perez.

But some progressives sided with Trump on this issue.
