Eighteen-year-old Javiar Flores paid the ultimate sacrifice on Wednesday night in an attempt to protect his mother at a Houston Subway shop when two assailants rushed in with guns, AP reported. The suspects barged into the Subway near closing time and pointed a gun at Flores' mother.
Detective David Crowder said Flores "attempted to push (her) out of the way as the suspect was firing, and he was hit and the mother was not."
The high school junior was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Crowder spoke with Flores' mother to gather information about the suspects but it's "very hard for her to talk about this."
A "GoFundMe" campaign has been created to help with funeral costs. "All Javier ever wanted to do was to protect his mom and keep her safe. In his last moments he did just that," the page read. This young man did what he always he would do and that is protect his mom. Javier died a hero."
As of Friday mid afternoon, more than $26,000 of a $15,000 goal has been raised.
