There's a lot of pressure that goes into making a half-court shot in front of thousands of basketball fans. Just ask Erin Tobin, who got word last week she'd won a chance to win a $500 Dunkin’ Donuts gift card. Little did she know it was all part of a plot to get her to center court.
The Rensselaer, New York, native and Siena College alum was brought out to try a half-court shot during last Thursday's Siena game. To everyone's surprise, she made the shot. But there was one more surprise coming -- a proposal by her fiance, who was dressed as the Dunkin' Donuts mascot.
My first initial reaction is 'oh no' because that's not in the game plan for her to make this shot.
Tobin’s boyfriend, Steve Duckett, had this all planned out. She was never supposed to win a gift card. Steve disguised himself as "Cuppy," waiting for his moment to pop the question.
Erin, however, stole the show.
The excitement of making the shot was trumped by another big moment when Duckett emerged from the costume with a diamond ring. Erin was floored. “He said I didn't say, 'Yes.' I was so shocked,” Tobin exclaimed.
There never was going to be a $500 gift card as a prize. It was all a ploy to get Erin to take the shot.
Since she made it, the couple says Dunkin' Donuts will pony up the card as an engagement gift. The video has gone viral, so they're enjoying their 15 minutes of fame as well.
